We can create legislation that would give incentives to manufacturers to use renewable resources for consumer products as well as biodegradable packaging. We can rebuild the grid to better utilize alternative energy and create nuclear power plants in low population areas. We can come up with something better than the combustion engine or develop a better fuel source.

Dude, you're the president of America! We live in a glass house, stop casting stones!
Today, December 10, 2009, Barrack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. This came with much controversy from both sides of the aisle. The right doesn't think he deserves this honor because he hasn't even been President for a year and the left is upset that he's escalating the war in Afghanistan. These are both valid points, however, this gesture is ultimately a brilliant "FUCK YOU" to george dubya bush. You can call me queer because I still hate fucking bush.

In 2001 I thought invading Afghanistan was the right thing to do. With the Taliban government toppled the people of Afghanistan are free to listen to music, fly kites, shoot junk and do a jig. Now we fear that Al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization currently based in the tribal lands of Pakistan (note: not Afghanistan), will obtain nuclear weapons from the Pakistani government. In an effort to prevent this from happening President Obama is going to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan (note: not Pakistan).

America needs to be able to protect itself without invading others. We need to be vigilant or at least have a President capable of reading memos from the CIA; dubya could have prevented 9-11 had he only been more of a reader. Most importantly we need to be respectful of all nations, not just the G8, not just the G20, but all nations. If we cannot commit to a foreign policy of neutrality like the Swiss then I hope we can at least be a little more even handed like the French. The Zionists should be able to fend for themselves.

Kaitlin Deering and I are going to be the American representatives for "Contraversion," an exhibition of Bulgarian/American contemporary art. The three artists representing Bulgaria are Prof. Ivan Bochev, George Dinev, and Vesselin Kourtev. The show is going to be at the Alfa Art Gallery in lovely New Brunswick, New Jersey. Alfa Art is located on Church St, right off of George St, just two storefronts down from the Court Tavern. The exhibition runs from May 9-22 and the opening reception will be Saturday, May 9 from 7:30-11pm.

About "Contraversion"

When hearing about Alfa Art Gallery’s second annual Bulgarian Seasons there is no question as to which of the gallery’s members will be the artists showcasing their contemporary works. Vesselin Kourtev and George Dinev exemplify the quintessential style that sets the artists apart from other practicing artists throughout the world. The story of later twentieth century Bulgarian art and the style these artists employ only grows more interesting when you learn of the great achievements of the man Kourtev and Dinev studied under in Bulgaria. Professor Ivan Bochev’s respectable career as an artist and educator lives in the creative executions of his students. Exhibiting the careers of Bochev, Kourtev and Dinev together connects the three artists on an international scale. It is a product of the experiences of a Bulgarian art education. From their native environment of memory comes an expansive sense of experience, which has inspired each artist to create a tradition of their own. In Bulgarian Seasons you will find the ongoing process of cultural exchange: The artists have absorbed the old, familiar style and tradition and recast it into new form. They break away from traditional concepts of composition. Through encounter and exchange new histories are written and avant-garde art evolves.

In order for the exhibition to be true forming of cross-cultural exchange it is important to recognize the juxtaposition of the mature works of Bulgarian artists to the contemporary imagery of young American artists Kaitlin Deering and Robert Mermet. The response and outcome of Deering and Mermet to their surrounding environment is similar to Kourtev and Dinev. The landscapes of Ms. Deering’s color saturated paintings provoke the viewer to question the imagery before them. However, this questioning and the response you search for is as open-ended and cyclical as nature. As in nature, the fluidity and poetic abstraction found in her works is better left unknown. Equally provocative, Mr. Mermet’s paintings and videos are a by-product of the artist’s relationship with American culture. The artist displaces societal norms into his own refashioned world and transforms persistent memories into a unique and satiric aesthetic.

Together, the creative collective consciousnesses of these artists present the pleasures and torments of our experiences with the world in which we live.

The show will include video works from Mr.Domino, J.H. Miller, More The Chai, Kaliptus, Aghori Christ, Lance Sells, Yoshi Sodeoka - performances by Philippe Garcesto and Asad Khan - live paintings by Gizem Bacaz, Collyn Gold, and Martin Cash - and a lot of music. Doors open at 8:00 PM, the video screenings begin at 10:00 PM, the after party will last until 6:00 AM and admission is 5 bucks.

Who Gets to Call It Art?

Last night I watched Peter Rosen’s documentary “Who Gets to Call It Art?” for the third time since purchasing it a few days ago. The film is about Henry Geldzahler, a legendary curator for the Met. Geldzahler is perhaps best known for organizing the exhibition “New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970,” a show that defined post war American art and confirmed the featured artists as bona fide art stars. Henry was one of the most influential figures in America during the later part of the twentieth century for determining which artists would be included in the cannon and this position came with much scrutiny for not including everyone, especially female artists. There wasn’t one female artist interviewed for this film. Despite the lack of female perspective, I would strongly recommend this film to anyone with an interest in art, regardless of gender.

The video above was made for Stephen Colbert's green screen contest. I would assume that many of you reading this are fans and regular viewers of the Colbert Report, if not then let me bring you up to speed. Every once in a while Stephen Colbert will ask his viewers to download footage and appropriate this footage into a new video. The objective of this latest competition was to take footage of John McCain standing in front of a green screen and turn it into a video that is appealing to younger voters. I've posted my video here because I don't think it will be featured on the Colbert Report, call it a hunch.

Although I will be voting for Mr. Obama in this upcoming election, I don't hate McCain. I hate Bush and thought way back in 2000 that McCain was the better republican nominee. I don't hate John McCain, I simply dislike him in the same way I dislike John Kerry. In fact Mr. McCain and Mr. Kerry are similar in many respects; they are both war heroes who are critical of war, they are both gold diggers, and they are both totally unelectable.

kait sold two paintings in one day. usually she sells one here and there, but last saturday she sold two paintings to two separate patrons. the gallery owner called kait to tell her the good news as we were dropping off our month and a half security deposit. we are both starving artist, so having a check coming our way that was more than what we were giving to our future landlords seemed like a higher power was smiling at us and saying, everything is going to be alright.

barack won the iowa caucus!!! seeing that iowa is a predominantly white state indicates that maybe, just maybe, america is ready for a black president. when it comes to hillary and obama, i support obama full heartedly. don't get me wrong, the clintons are economical masterminds that could rectify bush's deficit in a jiffy. but keeping that in mind, it would be nice to have a president thats not in bed with our corporate overlords. hillary has a horrible reputation for taking hush money and playing ball with the bad guys.

kait sold her first painting for eight hundred bucks!!! three of her painting were recently selected to be sold through gallery piquel (an art gallery in new hope, pa) and the gallery owner enjoyed one of her paintings so much that she purchased the painting for herself. i believe the gallery owner is planning on giving the painting to her spouse as a christmas present. i am happy for kait but a little sad to see the painting go because it was one of my favorites. the painting used to be hanging above kait and i's couch in our old apartment in new brunswick and can be seen in "modern times medieval minds" behind the christian devil's head. If you want to view some of Kait's work in person, or ever purchase a painting, Gallery Piquel has some of her work on display.

in other news three of my videos were featured in the art show, resonate 3, which has held at the crossroads theatre in new brunswick. the show was curated by reid bingham, co-founder of all over the where, and included selected works by lenny correa, ryan gutierrez, jen park, and matt west.

for the past month kait and i have been trying to find a replacement companion for bowie but haven't been able to find any lovebirds anywhere. it turns out there is a 'beak and feather' epidemic and all of the mega-petstores have placed their lovebirds into quarantine. about a month ago we found a family owned bird store that sells hand raised lovebirds, however, they are twice as expensive and sell quickly. we had to put a down payment on the bird before the egg even hatched. these are pictures of the new lovebird. the green guy is the one we're getting but we have to wait until he/she's weaned before we can take him/her home.
